For many years load balancing has traditionally been associated with dedicated hardware. Typically these load balancers have been running on proprietary ASIC based hardware. As the power of standard computing hardware has evolved following Moore's law, other options have become a possibility.

Today many of the leading hardware load balancers use x86 technology, although some have ASIC accelerations for features such as SSL and compression. This is because standard hardware can offer excellent performance. The Zeus ZXTM running on a twin CPU box can load balance at 2.2gig! This is more than enough for most consumers.

This method allows the performance of the device to follow Moore's law whilst also allowing the device to be easily upgraded from either a software or hardware perspective.
